Discussion Question 2 (Week 3)

Week 3 Discussion Question

Howie's family finally received a letter from their 'Pop.' They are excited until they realize it is a "Swiss-cheese letter." What does 'swiss-cheese letter' mean? After talking to his Mom, how did Howie know that something in his Pop's letter had troubled his Mom? Why is Howie worried about his Pop's safety as he tries to return home? (A clue to help you answer these questions can be found in the headlines right before Chapter 20). Make sure you answer all THREE of the questions and use examples from the text to support your answers. You should also make sure to clearly explain your thinking.

Make sure to answer the question with a RAD response and use details from the text to support your answer. Please check your grammar, spelling, capitalization, and conventions before submitting your response. Type it in your blogging doc first so you can go back and edit your work.

  1. A Swiss cheese letter is a letter that already had holes in the letter and it does look like Swiss cheese. What troubled his mom was that his pops had to get past the German ships and that the more they talk about it the more it will scary to his mom because she is really hoping he will get home safely. The reason that he is worried about his pops safety is because he wants to make sure that his pops makes it home safely because if the Germans kill him then him and his family will all be sad and then if one of them brings it up again then they will get sad again.

    1. I liked that you really explained what is Swiss cheese letter was and why it's called a Swiss cheese. Also I like that you explained what would happen to how his family if it is Houie pop gets killed by the Nazis.

    2. I totally agree but why do you mention bringing it back up, it has nothing to do with why his mother is sad

  2. They call it a Swish cheese letter because the letters have holes inside the paper and it looks like it is a piece of swish cheese. Howie is scared because his pop has to travel through these gunman boats and Howe's scared that his pop/Dad might die. Also the reason he knew his mom was sad is because his mom said Howie I don't want to see the letter.

    1. Mike, you did really well on describing what you think is a swish cheese letter is. You added detail into why Howie might be nerves about with his Pop. Also, I liked that you used clues for the book to prove your statement on why Howei's mom is sad.

  3. They call it a swiss-cheese because it is letter that has crossed out areas that have locations, dates, and specific destinations so if Germans get it they can attack them. I think that Howie’s mom is upset because his pop is coming home without a convoy so he in some ways he could get ambushed by germans. I think that Howie is nervous about his pop because it says “Allies lost millions of tons of shipping in1942.” “Nazi u-boats menace is seen as sole threat to allied victory.”

    1. Here is a good vocabulary word. The real name for a swiss cheese letter is: redacted. It means To censor, used by a government when parts of a document are kept secret and the remainder released.

  4. A swish cheese letter is a letter that somebody/the government cuts stuff out of like when they're coming home or important stuff to the person if they're in danger because they don't want the enemy to get too much information. Howie New something was troubling her mother when she rather know it because how we wanted to talk about the letter with her but she just said I think it's better if we don't read it. Howie is worried about his dad coming home because how he thinks that not she wolf packs are going to come up and torpedo is Dad ship and kill his pop.

    1. I agree because I think that the government does not want to send that private information out to the citizens.

  5. They call it a Swiss cheese letter because it is a letter with dates and location that are cut out so that if a Nazi gets it they don’t know ware they are and at what time.I think that Howie’s mom is scared that something is going to happen to Pop. Like the wolf pack is going to take his bout down, or it could be bombed. Other than that I say there is not enough information to be specific.

    2. Rajan do you think the Nazis could figure out where the boats were even if they didn't have the letter? Also do you think a Swiss cheese letter would be frustrating to read?
      Nice Job!!

  6. A: A swiss Cheese letter Is kindof like where some parts of the letter gets cut out and it makes it a mystery for the Germans . Also Howie was scared because if the Germans found out about the letter they would attack the apartment. Howies mom is troubled because in the letter it sounded like he might die.

  7. 1. A "Swiss Cheese letter" is a note that has blanks in it due to confidentiallity. For example, Howie's dad is writing a letter. He wrote information the U.S. Navy does not want to have civilians listening in or about any confidential information like location, plans, and strategies. This information was taken out by officers. Making gaps in the letter, just like the gaps or holes you find in Swiss cheese.

    2. Howie knew that something in the letter had troubled his mom because Howie's mom does not usually get frightened, and their family never recieves "Swiss Cheese letters". For example, Howie's mom knew that something was going on in the war. She was frightened by the fact they had made Pops' letter a "Swiss Cheese letter" she was very worried that Pops would die in the war. In the text, Howie's mom was so overcome by her fear, she was forgetful enough that you needed ration stamp to get milk. On page 79, Howie reminded her, "You don't need ration stamps for milk."

    3. Howie is worried about his Pop's safety because even though they all know his dad is coming home, he can tell his mom is worried about something that he does not know of. This troubles Howie because his mother is rarely frightened or worried.

  8. When they got a swiss cheese letter means that he got a letter that people didn’t like so they couldn't locate them if they did locate them the US would attack from where ever that letter was sent. Something troubled Howie’s mom is that she knew that Howie’s pop may never come back. Howie is worried that his pop may get attacked while he is coming home.
