Discussion Question 3 (Week 4)

The book is called "Don't You Know There's A War On?" and this phrase is mentioned many times throughout the story. What does this saying mean? Why do so many people use it throughout the story? Why do you think it allows people to get away with so much? Make sure to use specific examples from the story to support your thinking.
Don't forget to answer ALL THREE questions in your answer.

Please answer this in a RAD Response and check you conventions before you publish. Make sure to really explain your thinking and type it in your blogging doc first!

  1. I think it means to inform or remind people that there is a war because not a lot of people may know that there is a war on or maybe they forgot that there is a war going on in Europe. The reason why a lot of people say it throughout the story is because to remind the people that forgot that there was a war on or to just inform them that there is a war going on. I think the reason that people get away with it is because it is probably for the war and to give it to all the soldiers as a gift or stuff to have fun with or for survival.

Also, you really enplaned what you think this term means in your head and why you think that it is used for through out the book. Your explanations showed me what you think so it looks like you put a tone of effort in to this blog.

    3. When is the book does it say that people don't know that there is a war on. Other than that I really thought it was a good statement and how you really argue about what don't you know there's a war on means.

    4. I agree because if the people are panicking and can't stop you may need to remind them that "Don't You Know There's a war on?" to calm them down from panic

  2. This saying don't you know that there was a war on, means that I think of our troops and don't treat me wrong. People use this saying throughout this book because they want that person to agree with them. People get away with saying they're saying so much because they think of the troops and don't want to let their trips down.

  4. When they say “Don’t You Know There’s A War On” it means that if you did something bad it will soften the blow. People say it throughout the book because it shows people that something even worse going on than their social life in the world. I think that when they say it to get away with so much is to show whatever they did isn’t that important as the war.

  5. The saying means that soldiers are suffering in war and risking their lives and when people say something like 'Eat your green beans' and another person says why, the first person could say 'Don't you know there's a war on?'. and that means you are shutting the conversation down without people explaining themselves. So many people use the phrase because they don't want to go on with whatever they are talking about. Like when Lomister is talking about firing Miss Gossum, he says to Miss Wolch, 'Let me remind you, there's a war on' to justify Miss Gossum getting fired. The phrase allows people to get away with so much because they could be doing something really bad or something they are not supposed to be doing and they can say 'Don't you know there's a war on?' and not get in trouble. Later Miss Gossum says to not give the petition to Mr. Lomister so the kids decide to show it to Miss Wolch. So Howie got together some kids from his class and they all went to Miss Wolch's apartment by taking the dumbwaiter but when they meet her Howie realizes he doesn't have the petition. Once they got inside her apartment Miss Wolch said she would think about it but that there were rules and regulations. Right then Howie's sister blurted out, 'Miss Wolch, don't you know there's a war on?' because she wanted to justify not firing Miss Gossum.

  6. The title of the book Don't You Know There's a War On? means that people are supposed to behave a certain way when there's a war on. Like people are not supposed to be oblivious. They are supposed to be mindful and caring for each other, to support each other. This will lead to self confidence and positivity. They have to be confident for dads, brothers, and sons and everybody at war, so that people's attitude's will not lead to self doubt, which will lead to anxiety. This would lead to worry, and nobody won'ts to worry about family or friends dying in the war.
